What is known and what is unknowable? Is it possible for the unknown to be more present and stable than the tangible reality that surrounds us? These questions have inspired my work as I try to understand the human mind, our perceptions, and our interpretations of reality. The interior scenes act as archetypal psychological spaces that vacillate between themes of creation, destruction, and transformation. Each hallway stretches to unknown destinations, simultaneously inviting viewers to step within the alternate realm, while distancing viewers from the inaccessible connecting structures. As a result, I became interested in how people physically explore a space, both the occupied areas as well as the voids. Our senses deceive us, but sometimes fantasy is more enticing than truth.

Erika Dueck is a visual artist from Manitoba who finished her BFA (Honours) at the University of Manitoba in 2013 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Guelph. She has had the opportunity to exhibit her work across Canada in Winnipeg, Montreal, and Toronto, as well as globally, from Texas, to New York, and Rome.
