US is a non-profit arts organization that is dedicated to the Aboriginal arts community and the arts community at large. Through it’s programming, US promotes discourse about contemporary Aboriginal art on local, national, and international levels. Through this discussion, it brings together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities, knowing that contemporary art is an important and empowering tool for Indigenous peoples. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of artists by providing a vehicle for artistic expression in all disciplines and at all levels by taking a leadership role in the cultivation of Indigenous art.
The Urban Shaman staff is currently planning our 11th Annual 50 to 500 Members Exhibition + Sale, which takes place on November 14 to December 12, 2014. This event is a yearly exhibition program to show our appreciation for the members of Urban Shaman. This is also an opportunity for the members to demonstrate what our arts community can offer to the general public. In order to sell your artwork, Urban requests you must be in good standing or become a member ($20 for low income, $25.00 for regular member and we have a special $40.00 which includes a US t-shirt. Details on our web site). Pay Pal is available or if you wish to come in personally, office hours are Monday to Friday 11-5pm and Saturday 12-5pm (cash and cheques only). Artwork can be priced 50 cents to 500 dollars (thus the name 50 to 500) up to 100% of the profit goes back to the artist.
The event consists of an opening reception from 8 to 11 pm to celebrate an evening with amazing art from local Winnipeg and Manitoban artists, as well as artists from across Canada and even international participation. Last year we had over 60 individuals from emerging to well established artists submit, and we expect just as much participation, if not more. This event is great for stimulating conversation, getting to know artists in our community of Winnipeg and beyond, enjoying refreshments and snacks including bannock, a DJ dance party, and several gift baskets raffled off to fundraise for the gallery (non-participating artists cover is $5.00 at the door night of reception).
Artwork drop off dates will be from November 3-8th. If there are special requirements needed to install or to display your artwork, please inform the gallery through our Outreach Coordinator, Liz Garlicki at email@example.com or phone (204) 942-2674. We also ask that your work can be easily installed, and to keep in mind the better the work is presented the more the public will want to buy your art, thank you!
