In 1994, more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi group were murdered in a state-sponsored genocide that lasted only 100 days (April-July).
Rwandans hold annual commemorations to remember those who died and raise awareness about the genocide in order to prevent future genocide. This upcoming April is particularly important because Rwanda will commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the genocide. These images give a face to the Rwandans who died and the people who survived. This is an opportunity to raise awareness about the genocide among our University of Manitoba community, honour the victims and support the survivors. Additionally, this showcases the present Rwanda with a vision of hope, dignity and prosperity.
